10.20.40am GMT Fri 9th Feb 2007

CALLING NOTICE

Liberal Democrat MEP for the South West and Gibraltar Graham Watson will tonight speak on the EU's role in brokering peace in the Middle East at a talk organised at the Music Rooms, Exeter Central Library at 7:00pm. Members of the press are welcome to attend.

Speaking prior to the event, Graham Watson MEP said:

"The Middle East conflict is a matter which I have been active on over my time as an MEP. I look forward to using tonight's speech to present how the EU is ideally placed to work as an effective actor in pursuing peace for the region and how ordinary citizens can make sure that this important issue remains at the forefront of our thinking."

During his address, Graham Watson will consider the continuation of the EU Trade Association with Israel - the agreement which gives Israel preferential trading treatment - and also questions surrounding the recognition of Hamas in Palestine as a legitimate and democratic political force. He will go on to talk about the EU's role as an honest broker for peace talks and finally address how the ordinary citizen can put pressure on the EU to act on this matter.

For more information, on tonight's event, please contact the event organiser Helen Chessum on 01626 872721. Alternatively, you may wish to contact Graham's constituency office, the number for which is at the top of this calling notice.
