Ban on Sale of Small Kiwi Absurd

12.25.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 30th Jun 2008

As a Bristol fruit seller is told his small kiwi fruit aren't up European rules, local Lib Dem MEP Graham Watson, says he is backing proposals to get the rules changed.

Speaking earlier today Graham commented;

"The European Commission recently proposed to loosen rules on shapes and sizes of fruit and veg, but some national governments are saying no.

Being told fruit is too small for sale is absurd, of course we need measures to protect consumers. But at a time of global food shortages restriction on the size of fruit are absurd. Of consumers are aware of the Kiwi's size - this should be enough. The UK Government needs to press some of our continental neighbours into removing these crazy rules."

Editor's note;

Earlier this month Graham welcomed plans by the European Commission to loosen rules on the marketing of some fruit and veg.
