Wells welcomes Euro Commissioner12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 9th Jul 2010
Wells welcomed European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou to the City on today when she visited the Cathedral School and attended a concert in the evening. In charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, the Commissioner was invited to Wells by local Lib Dem Euro-MP Graham Watson, and was also joined by newly elected MP Tessa Munt. The party took a tour of the Bishop's Palace Gardens and met students and teachers in the afternoon, before enjoying the annual concert at the cathedral in the evening. It was one of the Commissioner's first such visits since taking up her new post in February. Watson commented; "With Wells Cathedral School aiming to become Europe's premier music school, I felt it important the Commissioner visited the city. "We enjoyed a productive afternoon and a wonderful evening at the cathedral. The Commissioner will no doubt now have Wells in mind when important decisions are taken in Brussels." Commissioner Vassiliou commented; "Wells is renowned as being one of the cultural centres in Europe. My trip confirmed all the positive things I have heard about the city and I would certainly recommend a visit to others." "I was extremely impressed by the School and would like to thank all the students and teachers who made the visit so enjoyable."
